![]() WE understand the need to keep you informed about matters that you have the most concerns about. Representing your views: The waste services contract is up for renewal and we are pleased to say that your Councellor (Trevor Wright) is one of the working party members to ensure that the contract is efficient, good value for money and to make sure our Rural Communities are protected. The new contract being considered will cover and 8-year period starting in 2021 and it covers many things including refuse collection, street cleaning and recycling to name but a few. Some of the key issues are predominantly around the recycling of materials, the values of recycled materials the disposal methods along with increasing the awareness of recycling and waste disposal. There are also potential future risks with regards to changes in Government legislation with regards to waste disposal and in particular food waste and the disposal value of recyclable material. How well do we do in our area ? Overall, we do much better than many as we have what is known as kerb side sorting which many don’t have, this means that we sort and separate all the recyclable material from the “non-recyclable material” at source. This means we don’t have to pay any more to separate it later in the recycle process , that means we pay less to have it processed and we get more from the sale of recycled material. So, what is the point of all this? The point is that waste management costs us over £5M per year to provide a robust service , we recovery at certain amount back by the sale of recyclable material (which is reducing) so it is a major cost to our community. Our roles in working groups is to represent your views and to make sure any policies support our rural communities particularly and that they do not create increasingly problematic issues such as fly tipping.
